Sim Fossil's 'Tidal Figures is like the musical equivalent of Antony Gormley's series of beach figures going of a Balearic paddle.

More of a 'companion' set to Dream Chinmey's previous release, Sorcerer's 'Sunlight Hits' (see review HERE) as it grooves in downtempo synth funk and the moon's gavitational pull.

Sam Fossil in based in Paris and not of Dorest's Jurassic Coast as you might imagine as this is very Balearic beach vibe that'll equally West Coast San Francisco: this is especially true of the Max Essa (Is It Balearic? Recordings, Hell Yeah, Bear Funk and many more) on the remix of 'Echo Marina'.

Project Sandro (a collaborative Rollmottle and Tony Watson) remix ‘Null Meridian’ into more of a space disco that's got the multi-genre beat vision of the trip-hop end of Chicago's lynyn (see review coming HERE soon).

The original tracks are lots more ambient/downtempo with a slow pace that you wouldn't necessarily expect from a left bank but definely live up to the 'Dream Chimney' name.  The:  label themselves say, "half-speed Harold Faltermeyer adrift in an underwater voyage", it'd say throw a bit of Steve Hillage/System 7 in there and you've got it; put 'Nyrosine' and 'Backcurrent' in ya ruck sacks.

The Sorcerer has performed some sort of alchemy here as 'Sunlight Hits' transforms into off-kilter boogie down hip-hop, jazzy beats 'n' Balearics, reggae and more.

The association between Sorcerer (aka Daniel Saxon Judd) and Dream Chimney goes back to the start of the San Francisco based label along with his label debut album 'Tape Dreams' which led to 'Bubble Funk' a couple of years ago.

You could says that the huge pot of his genre mixing in more focused for this album as there's a duel theme of an imaginary OST for a video game that's also aimed a the dancefloor with the magic combo of "galactic syths" and "chilled tropical rhyhms".

Don't expect Miles Davis' 'Sorcerer' but there's a lot going on in the tracks. 'Alien Shore', 'Mystery Tripper' and 'Casio Magician' - you get the idea from the track titles.  Well, you thought you were until the title track hits you with some dreamy funk in the Balearics (nice guitar work when you least expect it) before then we get some electric beach reggae with 'Control Your Soul'.

At a time like this, I'd usually say that it'd be great if there was a Biggabush remix (for 'Control Your Soul') but even his knob movement couldn't better this one.   And then there's two more tracks on the album where he does it again, 'Picasso On Beach' and 'President Skank'.

If you want to get wax-on, there's some 'Windchime Meltdown' along with 'Status Break' and the jazz-dub Island sounds of 'Winter Swell' so you can wax-off too!

At the start of the year, Dream Chimney's smokestack blew up with the "best go-go jazz funk" (on 'Geimotheque' by Tonarunur - see review HERE) so no surprise that by July, their back with another eclectic hybrid that's as bright as 'Sunlight Hits' that could easily grow into your favourite album of the year.

The cover looks a like a Sun Ra meets Jan Hammer meets Herbie Hancock re-imagination and the 4 tracks kinda of sound like that too!

Well they do from a jazzy key world but wash it down with some ambient synth boogie house and you've got a pretty near perfect EP.

What a way to start a new year with the best track of 2025 - all 11 minutes of 'Lifting Off' with ya best go-go jazz funk: amazing!

The EP kick off 'Give Me Your Word' which is too slow to disco, but not enough and in the middle, 'Whose Future?' and 'Will I See You Again?'.  Great questions as at seven minutes long each, you certainly get you're synth bang for your buck.

So such a surprise to find out Tonarunur is from Reykjavik, Iceland which is obviously the home of space boogie disco, right! (Especially as he's a fan of 'Intergalatic Vampire's like Natasha Kitty Katt - see review HERE).

I have no idea what a 'Geimotheque' is, but if it's a dream disco for smokers, count me in - this is 'Inspector Morse' for 2025!
