Out today (February 2nd) to compliment the Festa de Iemanjá in Salvador; Bahia's annual celebration honoring the Afro-Brazilian deity of the sea: 'Meu Canto'!

A year after "Deixa Passar / Ilê" (see review HERE) Gerardo Frisina reunites with Luzia Dvorek and Toco, this time placing Luzia's voice front and center. Frisina composed and produced the track, while Luzia wrote the melody and lyrics, with Toco on backing vocals and Alfonso Deidda adding flute throughout.

'Meu Canto' draws from Luzia's family history in northeastern Brazil, particularly Bahia, exploring themes of roots, memory, and music as both inheritance and refuge. The song connects deeply to Bahian spirituality and cultural identity.

It will be released later as a 7" paired with Frisina's arrangement of Dorival Caymmi's "A Lenda do Abaeté".

Regular readers will know we like a great 12" from the Ascension on Wax label and they've had a bit of a coup with a Nico Lahs remix too so lets get into the 'Mystic Aquazone'!

You'll recall it wasn't that long ago we we're eager to check out the "Bari Boys", Nicola Conte and Nico Lahs combination (as Tema Due) and their EPs 1 & 2 (see review HERE) and then we spot Lahs is on this EP, 'Mystic Aquazone' EP by Black Eyes (aka Matthew Jesus).

Following on from the 'Unity EP' by Toronto Hustle x Sean Roman featuring Javontte (see review HERE), Black Eyes' three tracks 'Fish Lyfe', 'Submarine Tuff Guys' and 'Vibin' Times In The Hydrocity' sound like they've been hauled out of the fish tank but they've been billed as "subtle somky house grooves" which indeed, they are as they follow releases on his own label, Upstairs Asylum Recordings (Ed. no truth in rumours of the inspiration that 'Gerry The Fish Whisperer' came from the YATM offices).

These tracks are deep in the Detroit house foundations so what of the Lahs' remix of 'Fish Lyfe'?  Expecting an "Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Latin" element? Well, don't as it's more rain forest dreamy house synthed up with jazz-funk undertones that's more groovy than the bangin' original version.

Ascension on Wax is a "Berlin-based house music label focused on collaboration with visual artists and dance music producer" so their limited edition 12s in individual sleeves, don't hang around and pre-order as soon as!

How great to see Dorado Records back in the game along with two big 'uns from the Brooklyn Funk Essentials; absolutely the prescription as to why you should 'Never Give Up' and 'Bust The Bus Stop' all at the same time!

Regualar readers will know that we love a bus/train/tram and other assorted transport sytsems so when Brooklyn Funk Essentials gets ready to 'Bust The Bus Stop', we're right behind 'em in the queue to route out the funk.

This follows the band's recent hit ‘Never Give Up’, which has been supported by Craig Charles at 6 Music, Spoony and Trevor Nelson at Radio 2 as well as many stations across Europe and the Americas. Both tracks will be included on their new album ‘Black Butterfly’ (April 24th).

Originally founded by Lati Kronlund and hip-hop legend Arthur Baker, Brooklyn Funk Essentials have, over 30+ years and seven albums, built a devoted international following and notched up over 60 million streams. Fusing Soul, Hip Hop, Spoken Word, Jazz, Latin, and, of course, Funk, the band’s journey began when Kronlund and Baker experimented with drum machines and loops in Baker’s Shakedown Sound Studio in Jersey City—hunting for that perfect beat. Early recordings featured greats such as Maceo Parker, Lenny Pickett, Tower of Power Horns, Michigan & Smiley, and Dizzy Gillespie, leading to the acclaimed debut ‘Cool & Steady & Easy’ (1994). Fast-forward to April 2024, when Kronlund reunited with Baker in Miami, rediscovering recordings featuring percussion prodigy Bashiri Johnson, which inspired new creative sparks for the next chapter of Brooklyn Funk Essentials.

The band’s acclaimed catalogue also includes ‘In The Buzzbag’ (1998), ‘Make Them Like It’ (2000), ‘Watcha Playin’ (2008), ‘Funk Ain’t Ova’ (2015), ‘Stay Good’ (2019) and ‘Intuition’ (2023). Alison Limerick has featured as lead singer and co-writer since 2018. The 2023 album ‘Intuition’ contained the hit singles ‘Scream’, ‘AA Side Single’ and ‘How Happy’. Kronlund and Limerick have been enjoying the recent renewed interest in ‘Where Love Lives’. Kronlund wrote and produced it for Limerick in 1990, it was remixed by Frankie Knuckles and David Morales and became a club classic and was featured in this year’s John Lewis Christmas TV Ad. It was when Arthur Baker heard the original in a club in 1991 that he contacted Kronlund about working together and they then formed Brooklyn Funk Essentials. “In the summer of ’97, I bought a beat-up old Fender Rhodes Mark I electric piano from a guy in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It was held together with gaffer tape, but it sounded really good, so I figured it was worth the $500 he was asking for it. As soon as I got it into my studio, I started jamming on it and that’s how I came up with the groove for ‘Bust The Bus Stop’. I recorded a first version of it with BFE members Yancy Drew (drums), Paul Shapiro (sax & flute) and Bob Brockmann (trumpet) which was released on a funk compilation, but I didn’t bring the song to BFE at that time. Fast forward to last summer when I came across that old recording and thought that it would be a perfect song to pick up for the current version of the band and turn it into a party jam. When we recorded the new version, Ebba Åsman - our trombone player, came up with an additional horn line which worked really well with the groove. I also added the lyrics for the vocal chant sung by Alison Limerick, Desmond Foster and Ebba.” - Lati Kronlund

The Bus Stop is a disco line dance from the mid-seventies which requires a mid-tempo (110 bpm) groove with a good swinging shuffle. Typical original Bus Stop jams are ‘Do It Any Way You Wanna’ by People’s Choice, ‘We Got The Funk’ by Positive Force and, of course ‘(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop’ by Fatback Band - All are huge influences to Brooklyn Funk Essentials.

‘Never Give Up’ is already picking up radio play from BBC Radio 2’s DJ Spoony, as well as BBC Radio 6 Music and Jazz FM. With its irresistible groove and uplifting lyrics—sung by Alison Limerick together with Desmond Foster (guitar/vocals) and Ebba Åsman (trombone)—the track shares a powerful message: even when times are hard, we must never give up trust in ourselves or the fight for what is good. Both ‘Where Love Lives’ and ‘Never Give Up’ share uplifting themes of love, hope, and resilience — values that resonate strongly during the holidays. The connection between the two songs reinforces Lati’s artistry and songwriting consistency across time.

The new album will be released on Dorado Records, a pioneering London-based independent label covering Soul, Jazz, Trip Hop, Drum & Bass, and UK Garage. Founded in 1992 by Ollie Buckwell and Charlie Lexton, the label is home to Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Jhelisa, Ebba Åsman, Sunship, D*Note, Natalie Walker, and Outside, among others..

This is an update as the Vinyl Version is finally with us as FCLR040 (see right hand side for physical evidence!).  Order your copy now directly from HERE.

And whilst you're waiting for the order to arrive, don't forget the interview with Dan The Drum (see HERE) and the remix reviews HERE (X-Press 2) and HERE (No'West 'Black Market').

Don't Forget, 'OUT NOW' as they say!

=========================

Dan The Drum & Stuart Patterson are a match made in North London, but don't let that put you off F*CLR's new 'celebration' of house, you could say it's the Sermon from the Clock End or White Hart Lane.

Football allegiances aside, Dan The Drum (who we know from 'JazzCazz' - see review HERE) and Stuart Patterson (Deviant, Faith and best mate of Terry Farley) are a pair that can tell you the history of UK House for hours; but in this case we've got nearly 8 minutes of e-vocal, an instrumental plus 5 more versions.

With label connections, there's UK house originals X-Pres2 on a 'Wild Pitch' remix, 'Give Thanks' Mix before the No' West team get involved (you know Beedle, Wallace and Morris, as seen on Twelve Caesars 'Ride The American Wave' - see review HERE)

The spoken 'London' intro sound pretty pirate radio advert style (authentic) and being a 'sermon', the gospel vocals of Carmy Love (a member of the London House Choir) gives us a classic house line - and if you don't get it, check the No' West Black Market dub or the piano house instrumental.

Closer to CJ Cooper's 'Live Love Give' featuring Robert Owens (see review HERE) but massively different from their last release from a couple of months ago, Accident Machine x Natasha Kitty Katt (see review HERE) but all are great plus the added bonus or trying to spot your younger self on the cover.

It might come out of the North London axis of Finsbury Park to Seven Sisters but the constituency extends way beyond the 'Special Branch' and the UK, a UK House Sermon for the world; summer anthem guarantued.

Check out the Bandcamp page for vinyl version HERE.

Moving from the ground floor of 'Dawn Till Dusk' to 'High Rise', this new EP by  Synaptic Voyager takes you higher all day long as the latest release on Cyphon Recordings.

It's been nearly a year since Cyphon dropped Synaptic Voyager's 'Dawn Till Dusk' EP (see review HERE), where electro, techno and deep house plus some "abstract electronica and Detroit-inspired futurism" is alive and well with this five track EP.

You'll recall Cyphon's first ever release was Yuu Udagawa's 'Forever EP' (and check her recent 'Urban Physicallity' EP - see review HERE) and since then we've had Kirk Degiogio's 'Elate' (see review HERE), Infinity Plus One's 'Reflexion' (see review HERE), label boss Jimper's Loxodrome releases and most recently, Berwick's 'Powerflip' (see review HERE).

So 'High Rise' is a return to future acid (Ed. or is that phuture acid?) of a "machine-built metropolis" which is kind of ironic as, in so many ways especially as in Motherwell they recently completed The demolition of the last 3 high rise tower blocks that ended a 25-year plan to knock down all 48 high-rise blocks across the local authority area!  Which sort of sets up the next track, 'Airbourne Avenues' which is icey as the walkways in the sky; was that the Sheffield Estate that had milk floats on the balcony walkways?

And whilst this conjures up images of old videos with Public Information/Town Planning narratives, 'Nubula' flips it to a even higher form of cinematic expression as the dark night time cityscape is based on high speed car chase dancefloor acid rave.

The duo that is Synaptic Voyager met 30 odd years ago at a time of the Sheffield electronic dance/pop/sythns explosion.  Now Matt White and Paul Baines are taking intelligent synth dance (ISD) early Kraftwerk-in-Peech Boy NYC inspirations like 'Deep Impact' as 909 drums, analogue synths hit a trans-europe HST with alarm bells (or is that buffet car alarms?)

The EP ends with 'Robot Interlude' which is Isaac Asimov in Detroit which is the best of the set on whatever level they are aiming at - expectations for this release were high and they risen to the occasion.

In contrast to the "atypical" Delusions Of Grandeur release by Declan McDermott at the end of last year, what's more typical of Jimpster's label to go back to one of their earlies break-through artists, the ever solid 6th Borough Project as they present 'The Deal' EP as they keep doin' it all for us!

Don't get me wrong, typical or not, the Berlin based Australian born Declan McDermott's EP for Delusions Of Grandeur, 'Doin' It For U' (with two monster remixes by Lovetempo and Tom Trago - see review HERE) is still top of our office playlist; a must have for all fun DJs.

And if that's not exciting enough for you, news of 6th Borough's new release to start the new year.  Laying the Scottish duo's cards on the table, here's four more tracks that the masters of the MPC have managed into raw disco/house winners like the title track with it's sax solo, 'The Hertz' (disco bounce gold with a built-in throb and Detroit groove with the bonus of a vocal sample that may have been taken from of ancient US Hertz car rental ad; "Uncover the Hertz"), 'Let Me Know' and the affirmative old skool 'For Life' that really combine so well together (love the 'radio signal' efx on this).

What you're going to go straight ahead for is the full house (Ed. I see what you did there) of the title title track, 'The Deal'.  Those with long memories will recall Mr. Scruff 'discovering' Moondog's song 'Lament I, 'Bird's Lament' and re-branded it as 'Get A Move On' [1999] and those with shorter memories, the recently dusted down 'All I Have To Say' by Alexander IV's (see review HERE).   'The Deal' here is like Mr Scruff's fast re-shuffle for strip poker and is a big tune that'll will see that pot build.

Those familiar with the early album, 'One Night In The Borough' (by the way, Delusions Of Grandeur's first album in 2011) to their re-emergence in the last few years with the 'Rhythm And Truth' and 'One Way Or Another' EPs, the continued expertise of Craig Smith and Greame Clark (the latter making his name originally as DJ and edit king, The Revenge) is just pure dancefloor groove magic that's primed for 2026 party seasons in the sun (or otherwise); get your poker visors on!

Still riding that Serbian Wave of jazz on A.MA Records as Max Kochetov Quintet release their new album, but who is foolin' who on 'Foolin' Myself'?

Eight tracks within an 'Intro' and 'Outro' envelope, Kochetov shows he's a master of the soprano sax as this album is a follow-up to the 2022 album, 'Altered Feelings' (also on A.MA Records) that launched the group.

Joined by Katerina Kochetova (piano - she of 'Beyond Motion' - see review HERE), Hugo Lof (double bass) and Miloš Grbatinić (drums), this combo is fantastic and excels on the track 'Terminal 3'.

All the compositions are by Max and are further fleshed out by a number of guest appearances by Samuel Blaser (trombone on 'Terminal 3' and 'Kirioki'), Fabrizio Bosso (trumpet on 'Tetra' - a nicely angular track - and 'R.Dance' - this is the one for jazz-drum-heads), Alex Sipiagin (flugelhorn) and Ivan Radiovejic (trumpet on 'Mood').

You might not immediately link the 60s Mod-Jazz/Hard Bop with the Hammond organ Serbian Wave of The DIL Organ Trio (see review HERE) but watch the jazz big heads like Peterson, Forge, Parnell, Beadle, Murphy, Peden etc get on this one.

Frollen Music Library return with there "signature sound while drawing fresh inspiration from vintage Mood Music and Muzak, with subtle nods to minimalist and darker hip-hop sensibilities that anchor the atmospheric exploration"!

You'll recall the release of Frollen Music Library's 'Lovely Beats To Study To - Vol. 2 (see review HERE) where Hudson Whitlock (aka Brenda of  Brenda's 'Bath Time with Brenda' -see review HERE) teams up with Darvid Thor and Henry Jenkins for showcasing the best of Melbourne’s thriving soul music community (perm from Karate Boogaloo, Surprise Chef and The Pro-Teens) as the KPM/deWolfe of today.

Another 15 tracks of funky hip-hoppy beats with "Rhodes and percussion, with the Korg Monopoly synthesiser weaving melodic narratives over chunky ARP Odyssey bass lines".

This is so well executed, at times you might think it's too 'clean' but even then, the fat synths groove it out in Bob James meets John Cameron via 70s US cop show themes.

Keep it synth and get into FML.

Whoever had the bright idea at Tru-Thoughts to release a 10th Anniversary version of 'Ceremonial' by Anchorsong deservers to have an event to celebrate - but where is it?

You have to go back to the Salamanda remix of Anchorsong's 'Windmills' (see review HERE) for his last release but back in 2016, the album called 'Ceremonial'.

At that time, I'm not sure everyone was in tune with or ready for a Masaaki Yoshida's Daedelus meets Carlos Niño at a Shinto wedding; or even his earlier ('The Storytelling', 2007) where his ambient, downtempo instrumental tracks were accompaned with a live string quartet.

Whilst it was big on the BBC 6 Music playlists, even massive Japanophile like DJ Gilles Peterson said,"He's [Anchorsong] been in his own lane for some time".

Well, this is as good a time as any to re-appraise the Tokyo-born / London based Yoshida as these 10 tracks are more to do with Afrobeat and Highlife circa 70s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo than electronic hip-hop instrumentals that it got mis-aligned.

Of course, any pusedo-concept album like this must start with 'Eve' and 'Mother' whilst the other tracks, 'Oriental Suite', 'Kajo', 'Monsoon', 'Butterflies', 'Rendezvous', 'Last Feast' and the synth-acid climax 'Ceremony' all add to the party.

For an album built around his MPC and keyboards some of the best bits are the mix of ganelan and twangy surf guitars.

A true original and good to have it back - ten years afte!

'We Want WAAN' is the  return of WAAN that we want, a new album out on Sonar Kollektiv that's different in so many ways!

You'll recall WAAN returned at the end of last year with '
Talking Trees' / 'Lodge Texas' (see review HERE) over two years since the album 'Echo Echo' (see review HERE) and we said then, "so good, they named it twice" (Ed. always worth repeating).

So this Dutch 'Monkey 'n' Tortoise' duo clearly work at different speeds (Ed. hence the album cover?) but what is clear is the "We Want WAAN";  being Bart Wirtz (sax) and Emiel van Rijthoven (keys) tucked away house in the middle of the peaceful Dutch island of Texel working on the dozen tracks that make up this sophomore album.

And I happy to report it's full of "out-there as Portishead/Massive Attack/Weekend a 'La Varieté' melt into a Sonar Kollektiv party" from the title track, the gentle/twisted 'Trees', with contributions from Marta Arpini (vocals), René van Munster (cello), Matteo Mazzù (bass) and Mark Schilders (drums), to the bonkers 'Mirrors' which "explores a new sonic territory with harmonizer-processed sax and frenetic bass & drum workouts, its live energy boosted by the sound of a real audience vibing along — recorded at Leiden’s legendary jazz bar De Twee Spieghels, where Ben Webster once played his final concert".

I love the two extremes of 'Talking Trees' and 'Mirrors' which seem to have more in common on repeated listens that you first think.   You don't have to know where Ben Webster stands in tenor sax history (Ed. he played with every jazz great from the 50s to 70s) to know theven he would acknowledge the progression to jazz-house post-punk avant-garde of 'Why You Didn't Get Me' that boarders on James Chance's no-wave or the distorted funk-jazz-house of 'Lodge Texas'.

And it'd be hard to say 'Cecilyum' is the middle ground as it starts as a slow church organ durge before "rising from the crypt" with Bart's sax - could you imagine Simian Mobile Disco and Jan Garbarek going to a Sunday service - me neither.  But if you know this is co-produced with WAAN and Oscar de Jong (of Kraak & Smaak) trust me to dispell any preconcieved notioned of K&S, as 'We Want WAAN' is nothing like them (in a good way - not that they are bad).

So what is BAD (the good one) is the contribution of Philly based rapper/singer Ivy Sole of original and clean versions of the track 'Baby Blue' with poetic hip hop jazz focusing on Sole's non-binary activism.

Whilst all this is going on there's a number of short interludes, the quirky 'Moto No Oto' and the title track which kind of set out their stall as hard to nail down / typical Sonar Kollektiv 'Berlin' to Gilles Peterson; wonder if they could do it live at We Out Here Festival?  Either way, these guys are ahead of the game in 2026 and we'd recommend the vinyl.
