Review: Blurry The Explorer - Clear Blue Mind (Nublu Records)

Blurry The Explorer's cleans up the blue book with an album of 'Clear Blue Mind' experimentation that's oceans deep and Latin too!

Hot on the heals of Guri Assis Brasil debut solo album as 'Animal Invisível', "an instrumental project fusing 70s Brazilian grooves, jazz, and psychedelic rock" (see review HERE), Blurry the Explorer (aka experimental composer Jeremy Gustin) returns with 'Clear Blue Mind', his third album, featuring Rodrigo Amarante, Tenniscoats and Annakalmia Traver. 'Clear Blue Mind' is Jeremy's most expansive work yet: a borderless musical journey, recorded at the legendary Marini Studio in Rio de Janeiro.

So a bit of Brasilian trend going on at Brooklyn's Nublu Records we think, especially as this 10-track album expands the project's borderless sonic world with contributions from an international cast including Rodrigo Amarante (Brazil), Tenniscoats (Japan), Annakalmia Traver (Rubblebucket, Kalbells), and Lola Parda (Argentina). Following tours and intensive work with legendary Brazilian producer Kassin, Gustin assembled core collaborators Ricardo Dias Gomes (Caetano Veloso), guitarist Ryan Dugre (Rubblebucket, Joan As Police Woman), and producer/guitarist Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Paul Simon and fond memories of 'The Grape & The Grain' - see review HERE) for focused but spontaneous recording sessions embracing intuition, chance, and the joy of not knowing where the journey leads.

"More often than not, the songs are born out of improvising over simple ideas one of us brings" Gustin explains. "We always leave space for...something. This unknown element is always exciting and confusing. " The album's diverse vocal palette creates what Gustin describes as "a full world of colors, shapes and sounds. " From Rodrigo Amarante's intimate storytelling to Tenniscoats' ethereal harmonies, Annakalmia Traver's expressive range, and Lola Parda's haunting beauty, each voice brings distinct character to the sonic journey. Vocalists Katy Pinke, Lip Talk, Tall Juan, and Tigra Rose (recorded in a Bali hostel after a traditional Hindu puppet show) round out the international ensemble.

The recording sessions themselves seemed touched by serendipity. While browsing the record shop beneath Marini Studio—home to underground venue Audio Rebel—Gustin discovered a recording of his grandfather performing Mozart's Bassoon Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. "I don't know what this means besides a deep feeling of being in the right place at the right time, " he reflects.

The name Blurry the Explorer comes from an unexpected source: a fleeting reference in the complete, unedited Diary of Anne Frank, discovered by Gustin during lockdown in a silent Manhattan. Frank mentions writing an amusing story for a friend called “Blurry the Explorer” a phrase that struck Gustin instantly. It perfectly captured the spirit of the project—an entity constantly exploring, undefined, and intentionally unclear, revealing itself slowly through experience.

Review: Black Science Orchestra - Where Were You? (Rising Opus Live Version 2026) (Black Science Oscillations)

BIG BIG BIG news - Black Science Orchestra are BACK. Rob Mello, Darren Morris and Ashley Beedle! 

You'll recall the Black Science Orchestra remix of Hollie Cook's 'Move My Way' (see review HERE) of very nearly nearly 4 years ago; No?  Where were you?  Perhaps you were digging deep into the Black Science Orchestra's history back to 1992, when they first hit the dancefloors.

'Where Were You?' was their debut single, and it has now been lovingly revisited, drawing inspiration from the energy and arrangements that have evolved through their live performances.

The track is inspired by New York City's legendary 1977 blackout—a night when the lights went out, chaos took over, and looting and vandalism made the headlines. But as history often reminds us, darkness has a funny way of bringing people together. While some helped themselves to televisions, others found rather more... intimate ways to pass the time. As the city lost power, plenty of sparks were still flying.

Review: Subverse - Flame of Mine - The Remixes (Colour and Pitch)

Colour & Pitch's new release is No. 99 in their impressive catalogue but for some subversive action, 'Flame Of Mine' is anything but a old flame as the remix action is proper international!

Downtempo gem 'Flame of Mine' by UK artist Subverse gets a synth-packed indie disco makeover from New York dance music mainstays, The Phenomenal Handclap Band; they of 'We Are Worlds Away' (see review HERE), Linda Mirada (see review HERE), Fouk (see review HERE) and many more.

Founded by Al Pascal and Maddy Collins, Subverse is a North London music project built on a love of blending genres. Drawing influences from soul, r&b, pop, house, indie and electronic music, the project takes a song-first approach to bringing different musical styles together.

Review: Fred Everything & Teuteu - Arrêt Infini (Winding Road Records)

Stop everything for Fred Everthing & Teutu as they join forces to give us four aspects of 'Arrêt Infini' on the icreasingly essential Winding Road Records.

With Mar De Novo's 'Last Disco On Earth' EP (see review HERE) following Loverbirds' 12" 'They Call Me' (see review HERE), the label's long and winding road have landed at the door of Montreal-based Fred Everything  and Teuteu.

The prolific producer, DJ and label owner with a career spanning over 30 years has released music on labels such as 20/20 Vision, OM, Defected, and his own Lazy Days Recordings; remixed everyone from Jazzanova to Groove Armada and Curtis Mayfield; and played everywhere from Fabric and Smart Bar to Space and Coachella and last seen on YATM on Thirt Years Of Freerange Vol. 2 (see HERE).  He makes records of depth and quality that blend vintage synths with modern production flair, moving dancefloors with musicality and substance which also makes hin a sort after remixer!

Teuteu is a producer, composer, bandleader and DJ whose musical journey began at an early age, teaching himself piano before immersing himself in the world of production. His sound navigates between organic improvisation and electronic textures, creating immersive and forward-thinking productions.

Fred and Teuteu met at an event in Montreal, where Teuteu was layering keyboards over a DJ set. After running into each other at other parties across the city, they linked up in the studio, and the result is ‘Arrêt Infini’, their first release on Winding Road Records. It’s a lush and atmospheric deep house composition, blending dreamy pianos, optimistic strings and bubbling percussion. Classily arranged across four impeccable versions, this is a record that will delight dancers as well as denizens of hazy afterparty hours.

• ‘Arrêt Infini - Part 1’ kicks things off with an oozing bassline pinned down by fresh house beats. Before long, it blends in blissed-out strings and pads which evoke a lush, tropical atmosphere. A seductive vocal intones, “I want you to try me … ‘cause I know we can make it, OK?” The journey then continues into a crescendo of lush harmonies that make everything feel like summer.

• ‘Arrêt Infini - Part 2’ moves things along with a tracky deep house number. Clean beats and repetitive bassline bring the drive, and warm pads float above. An elegant and timeless slice of electronica, made for the dancefloor.

• ‘Arrêt Infini - Reprise’ is a beautifully serene take on the original. Congas and strings create a mellow sonic tapestry which ambles lazily through the rainforest in your mind. The beats are restrained, the Amazonian vibes take over. This is one for those hazy afterhours, enveloping you like a warm hug.

• ‘Arrêt Infini - Rhythm & Bass’ is inspired by late 90s spacey bonus beats, reminiscent of the Idjut Boys and DJ Harvey. This is a percussive workout for the club, bridging the gap between different phases of the night.

Review: Dan The Drum x Chris Bangs - My Tune EP ft. Jasmine Rose (Ramrock Records)

Dan The Drum is getting in the habit of teaming up with folks to produce something that excels the parts; in this case it's DJ Chris Bangs and Jasmine Rose that combine to make 'My Tune' hurt so bad as a modern Lovers Rock version of 1978 hit by The Cool Notes!

Regular readers will recall the Dan's collaboration with Carmy Love's version of 'Hurt So Bad' ft. Darren Morris with guests Joseph Nesbitt Larkin and Carl Davies (see review HERE) and the remixes (see review HERE) plus Dan's tribute to UK House with Sutart Patterson, 'UK House Sermon' (see Interview HERE).  So no real surprise when Chris Bangs and Dan the Drum got together after Dan delivered several sophisticated house remixes on Chris x Dave Lyn’s latest track, ‘Children of the Sun’ they'd subsequently that they'd so a 1976 style Carnival track for the heatwave of 2026 - "What about a cover version of the 1978 Lovers Rock hit 'My Tune' by The Cool Notes?" says Chris.  And Dan says, "Yes I" (or even more accurately, "Yes, I & I") - also check out David's album 'The World I Hear' from a cople of years ago (see review HERE).

So a bit of a surprise that when the original came out in a period, Chris was holding down a Saturday night jazz-funk night in Bournemouth at the Exeter Bowl (as per J-Jazz deep digger Mike Peden and confirmed by Chris himself - see review HERE) and before Dan Spalding was dubbing down Manor Park/Romford Road; or would that have been Elton's in Seven Sisters or the Mecca on Tottenham High Road?

But what is clear is that they're inspiration on both of their musical journeys makes this release both a celebration of the original and a heartfelt nod to the sound that embraces roots, romance and culture. 

The duo’s fresh interpretation on the original pays tribute to the timeless sound of Lovers Rock, bringing a contemporary, respectful warmth and depth to the new co-production. This huge summertime anthem encapsulates everything that is fabulous, with Chris and Dan unleashing their prodigious production and arrangement skills on the beautifully ethereal vocals of Jasmine Rose, Joe Nesbitt Larkin’s insanely deft guitar work, Carl Davies’s masterful saxophone playing and Darren Morris’s brilliantly authentic keyboards. 

The enigmatic Dr R.E.Y provides an Augustus Pablo inspired, melodica dub. ‘My Tune’ is a super sweet Lovers Rock outing on Ramrock Records, mixed and mastered by Darren Morris at North Street West studio in Hastings and also saluting CB’s youthful 70s DJ career at his Friday night residency at South Harrow’s legendary ‘Bobby McGee’s’ night club. The original Cool Notes vibe has been brought up to date and has all the hallmarks of a 21st century Lovers Rock classic, introducing it to a new generation of listeners.

It doesn't seem fair that we won't have the chance to dance to this at the much missed Wilkswood Reggae Festival - Peace, Dub & Harmony in the Woods By The Sea (Think Notting-Hill-by-the-Sea - see P.S. below) but any Sound System that does play any of the 3 versions will be getting a load of love this summer.

Review: VA - Decade One - compiled by Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations Music)

Good Vibrations Music, the House label owned and run by Bristol-based producer Sean McCabe, is ten and what better reason to celebrate 'Decade One' than to have an album compiled by said Mr McCabe!

You'll recall, Sean McCabe was last "seen" on on MDA Grooves' 'Universo Positivo Remixed EP' (see review HERE) along with chorts Kai Alcé, JKriv and Medlar).  But this guy has been hanging out with the people to be seen with for many more years than a single decade but here's 8 tracks with him stepping into numerous roles.

Whilst there is a conherent link of 'Good Vibrations' throughout these tracks, McCabe is not one to be pigeon-holed (like the Latin-jazz track on the previous mentioned MDA remix EP) but whether intentional or otherwise this compilation has no rough edges or dodgy moments; you might think the talking vocals on 'Pause' fear Syl Messi by Harold Matthews Jr. & DJ Fill remixed by Kaidi Tatham might stand-out as angular: but no-way, it's one to the best raps and Tatham (non-Bruk) remix tunes!

That track was originally released in 2022, but does McCabe pause? Nah, he looks back into the archives for much loved classics like the openers, McCabe & Mike City with 'I Know Someone' on the UKG/House as remixed by Frankie 'Ricanstruction' Feliciano.

And the party continues, Dawn Williams ('Grow'), Lem Springsteen ('Connection'), Harold Matthews Jr. ('One Body' featuring Symone) get various McCabe remix variations - he's definitely not short of ideas - Patterns Vocal, Hook-up Dub, Classic Vocal etc.

Outside of that he's included a Black Sonix dub of 'Rise' by Matsiko World Orphan Choir' that very percussion focused with big synth weaves (remember this one WOMAD Radio fans - Hectic Mix HERE) and the McCabe link up with Mr. V, 'It Can Be' (West Mix) - an anthem as it points out that House is Worldwide!

I'm tempted to say, track (take your pick) is better that another but you'll soon get the idea that this really is a very 'Best Of' - take 'One Body' if you must.  But even the you'll want to end of a high point?  Even bigger than 'It Can Be', 'Pause', 'One Body' and 'Grow'? Yeah, get 'Lost In The Heat' with Sean's 'Cosmos Vocal Mix' (Hannah Khemoh) which kinda links in with the album artwork.

Expect to hear these tracks all summer long as it's 'the' Limited Edition Double album to vibrate to (in a GOOD way)... and it's FUN!

Review: Balaphonic - Organic Matters (NuNorthern Soul)

Trust NuNorthern Soul to get down to a Balearic summer with Danny Ward and numerous special guests including Flora Purim; yes that Flora Purim! 

So, at one end of the NuNorthern beach is Lonely Deckchair's debut album (see review HERE) and at the other, the latest arrival is Danny Ward's Balaphonic project, 'Organic Matters'.

And this really is the good stuff that's matter in-fertile land into an oasis of Afro-Cuban, Balearic, dub, deep house to follow the acclaimed 'Resolution Revolutios' (he's pretty good at coming up with album titles, see our Interview HERE from last year).

That said, if the name Flora Purim doesn't catch you're eye, you're not up with legendary Brazilian jazz vocalist.  Purim may not be on the new Perry Louis presents Shiftless Shuffle compilation (see review HERE) but she set the bar for Latin-jazzdance with her percussionist husband Airto Moreira back in the day.  Don't know how Ward got her to appear on this updated 2005 composition 'Switch' along with daughter, Diana Moreira-Booker but going to be a tune for the summer as her distinctive vocalese meets a gentle Balaphonic zephyr "shuffling piece in 7/4 time, paying heartfelt tribute to the Brazilian records that first made Purim’s name".  It's subtle but if you know your jazzdance, it'll remind you to get out the classic 'Tombo In 7/4' by Airto with Flora: did somebody say Dingwalls?

And as it's NuNorthern soul, all of the tracks reflect a Worldwide gentle shuffle whether it's spiritually jazzy Alice Coltrane influenced (as in the samba breeze of 'Dew Drops' featuring Robin Dewhurst) or a Spanish beach wear; like 'Balaventurers' where Ward joins up with another North-Western musician Joe Botham (aka Baleardelica) with "flamenco-inspired acoustic guitar lines" providing "the spark for a vivid, colourful journey of layered vocals, shimmering keys and perfectly arranged percussion".

The final guest on the list is Amsterdam-based violinist/composer Katya Gabeli on 'Life Of Strings' (Ed. you said he was good at titles) and its a complimentary combination of gamelan, cinematic strings and a touch of folk; danceflor to OST it's a winner.

The album finishes on Afro-Cuban, gong bowl, boom box, sultry night 'Boxfresh' (it's a great track) and the dreamscape of 'Home'; the calm vistas of Manchester in Danny's case.

Another essential NuNorthern Soul album and we'll see if he's up for another interview this year.

Review: VA - DJ Perry Louis (JazzCotech) presents Shiftless Shuffle (IMPRESS!VE Collective : BBE Music)

A compilaton that sheds light on what's happening today as IMPRESS!VE Collective have organised DJ, Dancer, Compiler, jazz aficionado Perry Louis to put together 12 tracks to celebrate 25 years of his jazz-dance teachings and club events that have marked the evolution of 'Dancefloor Jazz' and more!

Of course, if you've been to one of Perry's Shiftless Shuffle sessions, read no more - go straight to the Buy Link below and get your orders in as you'll need the 10 minutes of 'El Mondongo' salsa (by Los Corraleros de Majaual) which is a 'Vinyl Only' track.

And that's where this Shiftless Shuffle experience is at it's best - hot, sweatly, Latin, percussion heavy, cuíca, cowbell, jazz dance and it's Worldwide!   Not surprising 'Shiftless Shuffle' guest DJs have included Gilles 'Worldwide & Dingwalls' Peterson, Paul 'Jazz Room' Murphy, Colin 'The Original' Parnell on numerous occassions and the recent London Party gig had Nicola Conte (most recently seen as 'Tempa Duo - see review HERE) sharing DJ duties with DJ Lorne 'Not For The Faint Hearted' Daley!

"Not for the faint hearted" is what this release and ethos is all about, taking it's name from Herbie Hancock track (from the album 'Mr Hands') these jazz heads gig deeper funkier, groovier, jazz that loves a drum solo (Pierre-Louis Garcia's 'Tipazz') and is manic 100 mph - like British saxophonist Dave O'Higgins and his 'Samba Express'.  That's over 20 years old and whilst he might have slowed down a bit since, he's been in Darius Brubeck Quartet for many a year (as recently played on Gerry Hectic's recent ALL.FM show - see HERE) and loads of other bands, get anything with his name on it.

So how do you get into this 'jazzdance'?  Well 'samba' is grounding and the album kicks off with an exclusive by Kyoto Jazz Massive, 'Get It Together' (Samba Fusion Mix) and there's a stong Japanese connection to the scene via the likes of Tony Higgins/Mike Peden (BBE J-Jazz Series - see review HERE) at one extreme and Nik 'Mukatsuku' Weston at another.

And taking all things Jazz-dance, Mr Parnell played the KJM track on his most recent and most excellent Stomp Radio show and he also let lose the Bunny Brunel's version of Chick Corea's composition, 'Fickle Funk' which is a monster and appears on vinyl for the first time (after being original released in CD only times). If you know Corea's verion on the 'Secret Agent' album, Brunel was on bass and this version is longer and better than the original. Little wonder Parnell says that IMPRESS!VE Collective/BBE pre-orders are flying out the door!

Back in 2022, DJ Bob Hill introduced us to Italy's A.MA Editions label via Enrico Bracco 

'Flying In A Box' (see review HERE) album but a year before that, Uglijesa Novakovic released 'Don't Slam the F... Door' (from the album 'Reflections' on CD/Digital on A.MA) so this is probably another first time on vinyl track.  A little slower and more Latin is Jen Kearney's 'Warm Bath Eyes' - that's a bit Snowboy styled, but what a great title.

That Snowboy (aka Mark Cotgrove - last seen HERE with Dele Sosimi) is another Shifless Shufffle regular and you might be surprised to see Colonel Red on the tracklist (as in 'Holders Of The Sun' - see review HERE) and you'd be very hard pressed to find the Japanese release of Nation Of Multivere (there had to be more than one )track that came of the J-Jazzland of the rising sun! 

Did someone say, "Where's Flora Purim?", well we know she's on Balaphoni's new album 'Organic Matters' (see review HERE) but here's Chick Corea's 'Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly' that you might know as a Purim track but this time it's Eileen Howard's version.  And don't forget the be-bop/skat vocals! Norbert Gottschalk & Matthias Broede ('Samba Picante') is just mad and breathless jazz and like 99% of this compilation, you'd have no clue about if you're just digging in your non-specialit record shop. 

The album ends on another 100mph track as Pierre-Louis Garcia gives us some sax gymnnastics on 'Tipaza' (from 1984 album, 'Die Grupen') with cool drum solo whilst Tom Grant's version of 'Caribbean Fire Dance' is perhaps the essence of what the compilation is all about?

All tracks are very 'Perry' and this release follows the recent re-issued Soul-Jazz compilation 'London Jazz Classics' that they waited 30 years to do.  So expect jazz-dance to be the thing this year and it won't be a surprise that 'Shiftless Shuffle' sells out fast so don't hang about as you don't wan't to miss out and then have to wait 30 years for a re-press!

Review: Olsvangèr - Honey Tangerine (Oathcreations)

This is so timely as Olsvangèr's six fantastic tracks that move from dance to jazz to dub on the beaches of Ibiza to the the Festival fields of WOMAD via the teachings of 'The Brahman of Bromley' and loads inbetween - be brave and tune-in!

It was only last week we were lougin' and groovin' in ‘A Garden Between Us’ alongside "a stellar cast of remixers who add even further delight between the grooves" to find ourselves with Olsvangèr's 'Honey Tangerine' is a unexpected earthly pleasure as this is the newest mini-album with its "signature blend of hyper-kinetic, ever-shifting dance music".

Olsvangèr’s sound and musical journey are forever rooted in the liminal spaces that make up the broad-reaching and ever-shifting electronic music landscape, with his records consistently channeling that in-betweenness that imprints lasting impressions. A classically trained musician with a profound passion for house and techno, Olsvangèr’s sonic palette is one of both broad and delicate brush strokes, applying an array of compelling motifs within amorphous arrangements that blend and blur perspectives. His records seek out the faraway fringes as much as focusing on the intensity found in the detail, creating cavernous soundscapes that are impeccably tuned and effortlessly free-flowing. Seemingly genreless, his records are anchored in all that is known and loved, yet due to the music’s perspective situated at the intersectionality of electronica, a beautiful anticipation resides within every stanza of his tracks at what may come next. His musical language has found him releasing on the likes of Kalahari Oyster Cult, Hooj Choons and Craigie Knowes, and follows through within his imprint Tofistock, which has been pushing some of the most forward-thinking dance music of recent times.

‘Honey Tangerine’ touches upon the classic motifs of Olsvangèr’s sound, and as always, the room for growth within the record’s parameters remains truly endless. Over six tracks, Olsvangèr lays bare the directions of travel, with paths unravelling that feel well trodden yet with some that branch out towards new horizons. ‘Source of Thought’ opens up proceedings with a captivating ambience, where twinkling hues and lively tones paint the parameters of sound. The chuggy breaks that land deep within the mix drop in and out of view, allowing a deft balance between pure ambiance and rhythm to exchange dialogue betweenr one another. ‘In a Nutshell’ shifts gears in atmosphere and energy, with all eyes placed upon the club. The shifting rhythm section lifts the acidic melodic features up above, with driving bass notes and a euphoric vocal like lead linking the depths to the heavens. ‘Tulpa Nine’ swings into heads-down territory, where the drums swing slow and the throbbing bass hits heavy. The auto-tune vocal line up above creates an atmosphere of hazy, smoke-filled rooms, where the party yearns for downtime in anticipation of the next shift in energy.

‘Sunrise on the Lips’ gives over further chill out room vibrations, where the lights remain low, and smiles reside all around. The enriching drums provide the basis for sitars and glossy keys to glide across the top ends, with the mind invited to dip deep within this enthralling ensemble. ‘Zoom It Out’ provides the release into the room, with the ante upped. A breaky house leaning number, this cut grooves through its chiming melodic section and groove-laden bass line, with the polyrhythmic drumming pattern doing much to keep the energy residing very high indeed. The record is wrapped up with ‘Some Air’, which gives over one final jaunt through the airy, slowed-down slipstreams. A wondrous beat is complemented by melodic elements that chime, absorb and quiver, glowing through the night with such charm and feel. An engrossing composition that demonstrates what Olsvangèr is all about - a crafter of sound, where adventure is sought and found, never wavering but curating new connections, feelings, and tones, with an eye on what might come next.

Whether softly undulating or boundlessly expressive, Olsvangèr’s music remains a beautiful enigma that serves up both the glorious knowns and the captivating unknowns - ‘Honey Tangerine’ is yet another chapter in his glorious discography.

Roy Inc. teams up with Darren Morris and this time, the "song is an anthem for inner strength, endurance and self-awareness, and having faith in love, a love that comes with respect, trust and true honesty from that one person!! As with the release of 'Rivers Of Blood' last year (see review HERE) there was speculation that the No'West-ers Wallace (Jo) and Morris (Darren) would be putting their collective knowledge of 60s organ mod-funk to get down on the remix; and indeed they did - see review HERE).

Well, following on from the original EP featuring singer/songwriter, ROY INC. and Darren Morris, this time the No'West production team take the track and given it a 90s UK Garage makeover. ROY INC's vocals float effortlessly over Darren Morris's stunning instrumentations. Get ready to get your swerve on.

Both vocal and instrumental versions are as equally as stunning a the artwork and the message is as strong as you'd expect from Roy.

It's been a couple of years since the ROY INC & Darren Morris EP, 'Credit Me' (see review HERE) and this new EP is going get even more critical acclaim for this deeply emotional project.
